CIV4

I came to playing games on my pc late and even now there are few games that capture me. The game that I measure all games against is CIV3. It is the game that captured me completely for about two years.

ugo.com have a teaser on what features will be in CIV4. I simply cannot wait.

  • Animated 2D sprites are history. Civ IV features 3D graphics.
  • Countries can found entire religions, such as Catholicism or Hinduism. You can choose to let your populace worship in peace, or crush any display of religion with an iron fist.
  • The game features 85 technologies, 102 buildings, 31 new resources, 30 wonders of the world and 83 units.
  • The tech tree will not be split into eras, so once you’ve invented a technology, it’s yours for good.
  • You aren’t forced to start at a specific point in a civilization’s development. You can start wherever you choose.
  • There will be a new category known as “Great People,” broken down into five types: artist, tycoon, prophet, engineer and scientist [Why isn’t politician on the list? Oh, right. - Ed.]. Samples include Plato, Shakespeare, Newton, Einstein, and Michelangelo.
  • You can institute any type of government that you desire including democracy, totalitarian regime, conscription, emancipation, etc. If you’re having a hard time understanding why Communism failed, give it a go in Civ IV and see for yourself.
  • Governments have been modeled on the leaders of their day. A player who interacts with India while Gandhi is at the helm will find it to be a peaceful, diplomatic nation. Trying to make peace with Hitler (if he makes the final version) will have disastrous results.
  • Combat has been overhauled to be much simpler: all units will now have a single base strength instead of attack and defense strengths. Combining various types of firepower (e.g.: ranged weapons plus cavalry) will have a cumulative effect in battle.
  • If you manage a city well enough, it can bring about a “Golden Age” where the city enters a renaissance-style bonus period.
  • If that’s still not enough, you can enslave any racial group of your choice, incite holy wars, and commit crimes against humanity without regret. And if a rebellion starts to overthrow your regime, there’s always the reset switch.

me too - its the only game I play; in fact the only game loaded on my machine at the moment. The new version promises so much. I cant wait!

Why do all strategy games go 3D? It’s not necessary at all and the result is usually ugly, at least the first time around. Age of Mythology sucks in 3D, Warcraft III looks like it’s made for 10-year-olds. 3D games technology is still crawling out of its infancy and for relatively static games such as Civ, it is absolute overkill. I think it is laughable that everyone is always so excited when ‘their’ game goes 3D when for games like Civ it is completely irrelevant.

I’m afraid the developers will be so focused on making it all 3D that Civ IV will seriously lack in gameplay or is riddled with bugs. I’m skipping this one, I’m waiting for Civ V.

Yup, good point Mike. I am really hoping they don’t stuff it up. One of the things I like about CIV is that it runs fast and slick on any pc’s (notebooks included)
