It's not necessary at all and the result is usually ugly, at least the first time around. Age of Mythology sucks in 3D, Warcraft III looks like it's made for 10-year-olds. 3D games technology is still crawling out of its infancy and for relatively static games such as Civ, it is absolute overkill. I think it is laughable that everyone is always so excited when 'their' game goes 3D when for games like Civ it is completely irrelevant. I'm afraid the developers will be so focused on making it all 3D that Civ IV will seriously lack in gameplay or is riddled with bugs. I'm skipping this one, I'm waiting for Civ V.
