rebuilding the computer

May 17th, 2005 Posted in Uncategorized

The time has come again. It is the time when you realise that the endless process of installing, playing and un-installing software has taken its toll on your windows xp system and the moment has arrived for a complete re-install of the operating system.

I always cringe at the thought of doing this. The fear of missing some bit of data rises up within me.

The other problem is when do you do it. Even though re-installing the operating system has become much easier and less time consuming than it used to be, it is still a long process.

As I have scanned the calendar I am thinking tomorrow could be the day.

So, my question is what software do you think I should load back on straight away to my clean new system?

My staples are:

Microsoft office
latest version of msn messenger
skype
firefox with a few add-onsonenote
activewords
a compression program that handles the common ones (any suggestions?)
blogjet
mindmanager
Feeddemon
itunes and ipodder
divx codecs (anyone know the best way to do this?)
Palm software
Copernic desktop search
Onfolio (I am not convinced but I am trialing this at the moment)

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or maybe I have forgotten something crucial.

Plucker (www.plkr.org) and Sunrise (laurens.typepad.com) - a must have combinatino for syncronising web sites to your PDA for offline viewing

Personally my “I can’t do without” is Desktop Sidebar (www.desktopsidebar.com). It’s the most used piece of Software on my machine.
