A reader of geekyinfo – Fraser Dickson names Desktop Sidebar as his most important and most used piece of software. I have not used this one but have used such programs in the past. I don’t know if it is because my primary computer is a notebook but I found that my screen real estate was too precious to devote to the program. I can’t remember the one I used in the past but I remember it was billed as a preview of a feature in longhorn. I wonder if this is still in the longhorn plans.

Browsing the screen shots of this program reveals a pretty diverse offering of information you can get desktop sidebar to display. I have bookmarked it for further investigation and playing.
