Compaq V2000 - review
A post from Mrs Geekyinfo.
Well it was time to get a new computer as relying on Phil’s hand me downs was becoming more trouble than it was worth. The wife of a technophile normally doesn’t have the privilege of choosing things for herself or getting new equipment. So quite a novelty.
My main requirements for a notebook was that it would be as light and compact as possible to allow for lugging it and books around a uni campus during my part time study. I also wanted it to be under $1500 so as not to drain the budget too much. After a number of bent wireless cards, I wanted inbuilt WiFi. If at all possible I preferred that the thing didn’t look like it had been designed by the makers of desert boots.
My requirements cut down my list a fair bit, as most manufacturers seem to assume that nobody actually wants a compact laptop unless it is spec’d for power users. I flirted briefly with the idea of an iBook (which Phil thought would be fantastic fun) but couldn’t bear the thought of using iTunes and of being unable to work my way through my point and click PC adventure games.
The winner in the end was the Compaq v2000 series. In particular, I got the V2325AP, incorporating a Pentium M 1.6Gig, 40GB hard drive, 256MB RAM (soon to be upgraded), dual layer DVD burner, 14 inch widescreen. Early use has confirmed the need to upgrade to 512MB of RAM, but apart from that am very happy with the set up. Using the 10% discount for upgrading to a Source Mastercard in favour of my old ColesMyer card brought it under the $1500 mark (just).
The keyboard, screen and set up is all very nice. It is pretty light and compaq, particularly alongside Phil’s Sony with a much larger screen, but even compared to the couple of older notebooks we have at our house. It is very pretty, particularly when open and feels reassuringly solid and stable.

I too am thinking about purchasing a Compaq V2325AP, but would like to know how long the battery last. Can anyone help?

Dayle, I haven’t done any full testing of the battery to see exactly how long it lasts, because I mostly use it on AC power. I know that it operates at least a couple of hours on battery with no trouble.
However, I will do some rough testing over the weekend and let you know.

You can get them (keys) on eBay. Individual Keys or the whole keyboard for $20.

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk

Verizon is about the only place you can get the authentic RIM product and matching door. Most other sites http://www.e-lw.com are out of stock and even when they are in stock they have the black battery door which http://www.lw-blog.com looks like crap.
