Logitech Portable” USB Speakers

Logitech Portable” USB Speakers

Everything USB has some information on some USB speakers that will be released from Logitech this month. If you are wondering why USB speakers are wothy additions to your bag on the road and why you don’t simply take normal speakers, these usb speakers can be powered directly from the USB port. Therefore, saving you having to carry another power cable on your travels. It is true that non-powered speakers are available but I have always found that these speakers do not have sufficient sound grunt to be effective.

Everything USB writes:

For those of us who require better audio from our laptops while on the road, Logitech has developed the V20 Notebook Speakers. These “little” babies are powered and receive data over a single USB connection, making connections simple and neat. Sound is transmitted by a combination of a 2″ high excursion dynamic driver and a 3″ passive radiator (called a ‘pressure driver’ by Logitech).

The Logitech V20s come with their own protective case which has room for extra cables. Self-contained stands fold easily for transport. Since the speakers are USB, they do not require onboard audio in the laptop or drivers for same. All audio processing is done by Windows and the V20s alone. Logitech specifies 1W + 1W RMS power @ 4 ohms with less than .05% THD before clipping. The rather optimistic frequency response is stated as 70Hz-20kHz.

We estimate the dimensions of each speaker as 7″ x 3.5″ x 3″ based on appearance and the supplied driver sizes. The case would measure about 7″ x 10″ x 3″. We don’t know about our readers, but we see that as being something less than “portable”. We would probably just carry a good pair of folding headphones.

The Logitech V20 set will be available in September
