Carter Adamson of Skype has just emailed to announce that a new version of skype will be out later this week. This is exciting news as skype is one of the key tools I use regularly.
Carter writes:
‘Aviator (http://www.skype.com/products/skype/windows/) is still in BETA, but will be released as official public version shortly, and will include some significant new features and improvements:< ?xml:namespace prefix ="" o ns ="" "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
IMPROVED VOICE QUALITY
We want to make sure we’re delivering on our core promise that when you speak to anyone on Skype you’re experiencing that “like-being-next-door” effect, and I think that you will hear that we’ve made significant call quality improvements.
CALL FORWARDING
Call forwarding lets you forward incoming Skype and SkypeIn calls to a landline/mobile numbers or to another Skype Name when you’re away from Skype.
You can choose to forward your calls to up to 3 different numbers or Skype Names simultaneously, so that you don’t miss another Skype call ever again.
There are no subscription charges to forward your calls and it won’t cost others any extra to call you. You simply pay the standard SkypeOut rates to call the mobile or landline number that you forward to (forwarding to another Skype Name is free!).
PERSONALISE SKYPE
Personalise Skype consists of a new selection of Skype sounds, ringtones and pictures that you can use to personalize your Skype experience. You can buy these new sounds and pictures from our webstore. For now, Personalise Skype works only with Skype for Windows 1.4. Have a look around as there might be some freshly tailored Skype freebies in the next days.
Additional improvements in this version include: smarter Search, improved Adding contacts, easier Getting Started Wizard and importing contacts from your Outlook, Outlook Express and Opera address books.
NEW SKYPE LINKS
With the new Skype for Windows, we’re also introducing more flexible Skype links that can be posted on your blog, website, email signature file or any other application that reads HTML. The new links introduce a more flexible syntax (skype:// schema) that extends the choice of actions you can perform in a click. Besides calling, you can now do things like start a text chat, add to contacts, view profile, leave voicemail and more. Keep checking out share.skype.com where you will see them featured soon.
OUR NEW SKYPE TOOLBARS
And finally, our new Skype Toolbars for Internet Explorer and Outlook let you find and call other Skype users from other popular desktop applications.’
Thanks for the heads up Carter!
