The blogging toolkit

I was thinking further about mindmanager. You can see by my excitement regarding the new version of Mindjet’s mind manager program that I love this program. My uses of this program are varied but one of the things that I have started to do is to map out my writing.

It got me thinking about how mindmanager, and indeed the concept of mind mapping can be used effectively for bloggers. Many of my posts on geekyinfo are not comprehensive enough to warrant the time spent in planning out the post in a mind map. But on my other blog – signposts I often use it. Other writing I do for my job is helped enormously by mindmapping the ideas first in mindmanager.

So, I started thinking about the software tools that I use for blogging. I thought I would share them with you and see if anyone had some other suggestions of software tools that help them blog. Your list does not need to be the tools that you would never give up, even if you were on a desert island type scenario but just what you find useful – even if you use the tool only occasionally for blogging.

My blog toolkit

Mind Manager – the reasons have already been listed.

BlogJet – this has made blogging so much easier. The biggest feature I think is the way it makes uploading images as part of your post as easy as click, click.

Wordpress – runs both of my blogs – whole box and dice. Great software and free!

Firefox – the tabbed feature of firefox just makes browsing a delight and allows me to follow threads of conversations through the blogsphere without closing the original post.

Fireftp – a great add-on to firefox that gives you a ftp client inbuilt into firefox. What more could you want to quickly upload that script or php file that is going to improve your blog no end?

Onfolio – I used to use feeddemon for my rss reader. I am keeping an eye on the new version due out soon, but reluctantly I have moved away from feeddemon to Onfolio. I say reluctantly. not because of any problems with Onfolio but because I really do love feeddemon. But Onfolio has a number of advantages I believe over feeddemon. The two major ones for me is firstly it integrates into firefox which means I never have to leave the firefox environment and secondly it has a wonderful internet research capacity. I am currently only using the free version but am considering upgrading to the pro version in order to gain the outlook integration.

Snagit – this is a great program for capturing anything on your screen and putting it into a image. I have set it up to default to a jpg file so I can quickly grab an image and get it ready for upload to my blog. I have only started using the program and would be interested to know if anyone is using a freeware program that does the same thing, as I really only use 10% of the functionality of Snagit.

Ipodder – This program grabs podcasts and gets them ready to be loaded onto my ipod. It might sound strange to include a podcasting program in a blogging toolkit list but I think it is essential for bloggers to listen to the available podcasts on their area of blogging.

adsense notifier – Adsense Notifier simply shows your adsense stats on the status bar of firefox and updates the stats automatically.

    - Ecto (for Mac) for offline and remote publishing to all my blogs.
    - Firefox - tabbed browsing revolutionised my blogging
    - WordPress and Movable Type - WP is fast becoming my preference
    - Bloglines - News Aggregator that I love because its web based

I’m sure there is more - but these four tools are essentials and keep me going.

I’d add to that Skype and Adium (which combines MSN, Yahoo, AIM and Google Talk into the one client) which are increasingly becoming essential as I network and consult with other bloggers.

  2. 2. Larry Says:

Serendipity (www.s9y.com) for the software that runs my weblog. Very easy to use. Serendipity has a neat feature for add-ons that allows you to add really cool functionalitys by just point and click. Oh, and its free and open source.

  3. 3. Martin Says:

    - WordPress by a mile
    - Firefox - can’t go pass those tabs
    - KeyNote - a tabbed notepad type app that I use for to store all future posts and ideas

Got to check out BlogJet - sounds like a real time saver and I’m a big believer in mind mapping so thanks for the heads-up on MindManager - it’ll work great on a tablet pc one day.

  4. 4. Andy Merrett Says:

Safari - for the tabbed browsing. Firefox is IMO slower on Mac and I’m used to the keyboard shortcuts in Safari

GraphicConverter - for quick editing and saving of graphics

Photoshop - for header creation, more advanced graphic manipulation.

Grab - OS X’s built in screen grabber

    Wordpress - naturally

Bloglines - I need up-to-date news in several locations so desktop aggregation is no good. Except when it goes down, it’s fine for me

TextEdit - for quick editing of HTML and CSS files

PageSpinner - for more advanced HTML editing, though it’s not required so much now I run off template-driven sites

    Future:

Looking to see if I can get Automator workflows in to speed up any of my activities.

  5. 5. Robb D. Says:

    -Worpress for blog engine
-w.bloggar for publishing (I used to use Blogjet but w.bloggar has more features and is free)
-Still using IE, but have upgraded to 7.0 which has tabs
-Pluck for all of my RSS and genaral bookmarks (is why I still use IE)

  6. 6. Christian Connett Says:

I am really bummed so far this week because I am reading some great blogs, and I truly want to reply, but unfortunately, our co-located servers were down in Port Arthur, Texas, and Hurricane Rita has lovingly knocked everything out!

    Regardless, here is my list:

WordPress - We host all of our own WordPress blogs, except for my new WordPress.com blog… Need I say more?

Bloglines - Great online aggregator that I have been using since December of 2003.

    TypePad - Great text/code editor.

PhotoShop - All of my graphics and pics

    iPodder - Podcast receiver

    Easypodcast - Podcast creation wizard

BlogJet - Desktop Blogging. Also great for saving my posts locally, so when my servers go down, I still have local copies of my posts.

That pretty much sums up my Blogging Toolkit

    J Christian Connett, CPM
    To blogging…

  7. 7. Christian Connett Says:

    OK. I meant TextPad for text/code editing…

I do have a TypePad blog too.

  8. 8. Gone Away Says:

Opera - now free and has tabs better implemented than Firefox; plus it’s much faster and prettier. Admittedly, I still use Forefox but only because it has all my hundreds of bookmarks in it. I keep telling myself that one day I’ll make the switch…

Notespad - Freeware text editor that I do just about everything in. Most importantly, it has the ability to open multiple text, HTML and XML files accessible by tab.

Paint Shop Pro - I’d love to know how all you guys can afford the overweight and overexpensive Photoshop. Or are you cheating somewhere along the line…? PSP does just about everything PS does anyway.

IrfanView - Freeware image viewer and much more. Love the way it does thumbnails.

  9. 9. Rob Lewis Says:

Wordpress - My CMS of choice, preferred to TextPattern.

Firefox - as others have said, tabbed browsing is very useful.

Newsgater + FeedDemon - For keeping on top of RSS feeds, is both a web-based solution (Newsgator) and PC application (FeedDemon) which can be synchronized.

Must give Ecto a try at some point, as it sounds very good.

  10. 10. World Cup Corner Says:

WordPress & MT - lately only WP
Macromedia Dreamweaver - only for hand coding
    Macromedia Fireworks
    Total Commander - for ftp
Bloglines - my prefered RSS reader
    FireFox

.. there are more but not so important.

  11. 11. Tyler Says:

MWSnap is the best screen cap program I’ve found. Small, stable, free and fully featured. The only reason I still have SnagIt installed is for scrolling screen captures. If MWSnap ever got that, wow.

For FTP check out Novell’s Netdrive. It maps your web server as another drive on your system making it ridiculously easy to use. Since it’s treated as another drive it doesn’t matter which text editor you use, you can always work directly on the server. No more saving, then uploading. Phooey, uploading!

  12. 12. Joseph Says:

Mind Manager - I have also started playing around with Mind Manager to help me with my ideas, but before that I used PersonalBrain.

BlogJet - Would probably switch to Ecto if the Windows version was as good as the Mac version.

WordPress - Need I say more?

Affiliate Organizer - I wish I had this when I first started out, but now it is the only thing that I use to keep track of all my affiliate links.

Dragon Naturally Speaking - Occasionally use this when I am drafting posts (I edit later), because sometimes I just can’t be bothered to type and it flows better when I speak about a topic.

Newsgator - Outlook is always open, so it makes sense to read my RSS feeds in it also..

Outlook - I need more than just an email client. I need to keep track of all the things that I need to do, because I told you that I am going senile.

NEO Pro - To organize all my email.

Trillian Pro - Allows me to do all my messaging from one client.

    Skype - No explanation necessary.

    FlashFXP - Great FTP program.

Flashget - Does actually speed up my downloads.

Firefox - Prefer it over Opera, because of the handy extensions.

AI Roboform - Because I just can’t remember all those damn user names and passwords. I have already told you that I am going senile.

NOD32 - To detect any viruses - I like it so much, I have become an official Reseller and it is soooo much better than the others.

Spyware Doctor - To keep the spyware at bay and it is much better than the likes of Spysweeper.

ZoneAlarm - Did switch to Outpost last year, but have now switched back to this software firewall, because it is much improved.

UltraEdit - To customize all my Wordpress templates, forum signatures, etc…

As-U-Type- To spell check what I type, no matter what program I am using (it isn’t on at the moment though).

Windows Media Player - So, I can rock while I type.

Paint Shop Pro - For my pathetic attempts at graphics.

WinRAR - To decompress the files I download, such as WordPress plugins.

ACDSee - To keep track of all my graphics.

SmartSaver Pro - To reduce the size of my graphic files.

Color Schemer Studio - To help me with colour schemes when I am designing my blogs.

Top Style Pro - Much easier to sort out all those stylesheets with this.

Break Reminder Pro - To make me take regular breaks, when I am sitting in front of my PC all day.

  13. 13. Miha Says:

WP, Dreamweaver (coding, ftp), Fireworks, SiteMeter, Feedburner, Rojo (rss reader), …

  14. 14. Kevin H Says:

Are there any Linux bloggers out there or am I the only one?

    Akregator - RSS reader (Linux)

    Firefox - Browser

TiddlyWiki - Self-hosted Wiki for managing lists, bookmarks, post ideas, etc.

    Kate - Editor (Linux)

GIMP - Image manipulation & graphics (Linux version of Photoshop)

WordPress & Textpattern - publishing platforms

    WordPress - of course
FireFox - cause of the tab, but latetly moving onto Opera bc its a lot faster, only if it had a plugin for PageRank.
PhotoShop - to edit pics like resizing it
Zend Studio - to creat and edit the php files
Bloglines - to stay inform of the news
Google - finds lots of additional links
WS FTP - well FTP silly
Submission form - For people to submit news to me

I think I am missing some in this list.

    5-Clicks (to capture images)
EditPadPro (for longer and tabbed editing)
    WS_FTP_LE & NotePad (100% website modifications)
BlogLines (ever since I needed it on & off location)
AZZCARDFILE (I log dates and # of entries in each blog as a memo basis, keep affiliate links and passwords, etc.)
Firefox - I only use when I need the AARDVARK extension to help outline design problems
There’s some interesting blog app’s in here so, you never know if my own list will grow (thanks Darren for pointer)

And since nobody else will ‘fess up to this…

Excellent post and great idea! I am still blogging on blogger.com, but am considering moving to a hosted site soon. This will certainly help me get started with style! Thanks!

  24. 24. Malach Says:

Net News Wire and Bloglines (home and work, respectively) for RSS aggregation. NNW is a lot faster, but not available at work. I try and avoid content overlap between the two, although some sort of sychronisation would be nice.

Firefox - browser of choice - tabs are *the* killer feature.

MT and Wordpress as blogging platforms - MT is used by Creative Weblogging and my Digital Photography blog (http://digital-shot.com/) is hosted on that, while my personal blog (http://scroll.redemption.co.nz/) is on Wordpress.

del.icio.us to bookmark things I find while at my day job to blog about when I get home.

ecto (mac) for posting - love the drag and drop of images, and the automated formatting of images.

Photoshop gets used once in a while, ditto the mac screen grab built in stuff - but not that often.

  25. 25. Zeth Says:

“would be interested to know if anyone is using a freeware program that does the same thing, as I really only use 10% of the functionality of Snagit.”

How about Alt+Print Screen ? It is a cross-platform solution that works and is free. Just paste into the GIMP using “paste as a new image” (This is the Windows version http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html , GNU/Linux users will already have it). Takes me less than 10 seconds and has the advantage that it is all setup if you want to add arrows or captions into the image.

  26. 26. Mike K Says:

Excellent idea for a post, and I picked up some tips!

    Hardware:
    ————-
Powerbook G4 12″ - the best computer I’ve ever owned by far
iPod Nano (B/4) - tunes are required to enhance the blogging experience ;-)
Sony Ericsson S710 with high-speed Edge Internet service (no more searching for WIFI and it works almost everywhere I get service) $70/month but worth it

    Software:
    ————–
I use TypePad because I’m a blogger, not a sysadmin, dammit!
I use Safari and Firefox, but prefer Safari
OS X’s built in Grab screen capture tool
ImageWell - I have Photoshop but almost never use it anymore for blogging (free!)
NetNewsWire to read blogs (worth every penny)
Pubsub to watch for important terms
Google News agent to send me interesting stories to write about
TextWrangler for editing (excellent and free!)
Microsoft Word for editing long posts (yeah, I know they’re evil, but…)

There’s more, but I’m almost at my station on the train…

    - Mike

  27. 27. Robyn Says:

-Firefox and the tabs are useful. I especially like the bookmarks manager here. I have created a folder for all my affiliate sites’ logins. I can choose to open them all at once in tabs with one click and that makes it so much easier to add to my duzins.com site (deals).
-Bloglines (being web-based) is helpful. I can open it in the first tab and all the stories I am into can be opened behind it. That way I don’t lose my train of thought while reading through the list, I can just click-it to read all those story ideas at once. And, once I’ve got 50 or so tabs open, I can read them offline (obviously I can’t click through them, but I can read what they are open to). If we are about to leave, I’ll spend 20 mins pulling posts from Bloglines into new tabs so I will have something to read on the way.
-Adsense Notifier stops me from checking the stats constantly. I don’t know why I feel I have to know because the figures are not blowing me away by any means LOL
-Trillian helps me stay connected. I can google-chat, IRC, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc all in one interface for free (well, I pay for the PRO just because I have a buttload of contacts).

I think that’s my favorites. Obviously, we all have others (like maybe Outlook for saving old mail w/o keeping it as new for reminders, Konfabulator’s RSS widgets, etc) that are useful, but for the most part, these are the ones I can’t do without.

  28. 28. Marcel Says:

    WordPress: you might know ;-)
Mozilla Firefox: as my standard web browser
a handful of Firefox addons: Aardvark, MeasureIt, Adsense Notifier, Screen grab, Google Pagerank Status
MS Internet Explorer: to check my blog on IE after having modified it
Adobe Photoshop Elements: to do some work on pictures before publishing in my blog
MS FrontPage: to work on CSS (I know - overkill solution, but I’ve used FP for many years and I am used to it)
WS FTP Professional: to up/download stuff to/from my web server
CUEcards: a fantastic desktop database to store ideas, texts, links etc. (my extended memory)
GreatNews: RSS reader to spy on other blogs
BlogDesk: a offline blog publishing tool (giving a try since some days; happy about simple editing, not so happy with it’s posts when re-editing the posts in WP)
GroupMail: to publish my monthly newsletter and manage the subscriptions to its destribution list
and finally: my brain and my fingers to post (sorry, no link, no download) :-)

  29. 29. Andy Merrett Says:

    Gone Away asked:
    >I’d love to know how all you guys can afford the overweight and overexpensive Photoshop

I bought a complete package laptop and software so it came with it. I probably wouldn’t buy Photoshop on its own, but it was part of the deal. The SE version isn’t too expensive? Depends what you want. It is quite b loated, but it’s also a standard in the industry, so it’s good to know it, I guess. Depends what you’re doing.

I use a lot of freeware/shareware stuff as well.

I notice if I search for Answerpod on Yahoo/Google the number of users is growing, so I think it might be an upcoming trend. Anyway, I like it not just because I can make money but it also archives all the Q&A for me, lets me store stock answers, even allows voice messages (though I haven’t used that yet).

You, like many women are asking the question “do breast enhancement pills really work?” Larger breasts seem to the elusive object of desire for so many these days, especially with increasing numbers of women getting surgical breast augmentation, it’s almost become a status quo.
