handling my email/tasks and calender
I have been continuing my search for a good way to handle email/tasks and my calendar. You read about my thinking of moving away from Microsoft Outlook here.
My intention was to move my tasks to MindManager and Resultsmanager, my email to gmail and I was just going to use my Treo for my Calendar.
So, an update:
- Moving my tasks to Mindmanager and results manager is wonderful and this is a keeper. The ability of mindmanager to visually display what I am working on and things that I need to do is invaluable and seems to make me more organised. The results manager add-on to mindmanager makes implementing my GTD processes easy in mindmanager.
- I moved my email to thunderbird for about a day but then moved on to gmail when I had trouble with a number of attachments sent from team members who were using Microsoft Outlook. My experience with gmail was a good one, it has a number of features that I love – particularly the tagging feature. Although I am on the net almost all the time, there was a short time when our isp went down and I was left without being able to see my stored email. So, that was one disadvantage to using an online web application.
- My treo worked fine for my calendar. This is because I had basically been operating like this for some time and only syncing for back up purposes to Outlook. I try and discipline myself to only inputting Calendar events on my treo. This means if I am called away from my desk, I can pick up my treo and know that the treo has my latest calendar stored in it.
And now..
- I have returned to Outlook. Despite its crashing – it is just the best out there for my purposes at the moment.
- I have found a way to share my calendar with my Assistant and my wife by using airset. This web app has a desktop application that will automatically sync my outlook calendar and contacts to its web app. This means I can share out what I want and to who I want for free. Much better than moving to exchange server!
- One of the major reasons I moved back to Outlook is the mindmanager add-on to Outlook. This allows me to easily grab a email and pop it into my project map. It handles attachments wonderfully too and is a wonderful piece of programming by the Mindjet guys.
So, I am back to Outlook. But, I keep looking – hoping that personal information manager utopia is just around the corner!
