Tom Adelstrin pens an article about Why people like linux.

So, here’s the most current findings I have in order of importance. They differ greatly from the reasons Ransom Love gave at a Linux Business Conference in Austin six years ago when the major reasons people used Linux included: File and Print serving, an Internet Platform, Business Applications and Low-cost alternative for LANS.

  • Community support and applications
  • Web services
  • Microsoft alternative
  • Stability and Security

Today I returned to dabble in linux. As you do when you are on holidays. I download ubuntu and tried to install it on an old Dell inpirion 8100 laptop. Starts ok and then falls over at 12% saying it cant read the CD. Mmmm, I think must be my iso burn. So, burn it again but same problem. So, I download it again… still the same.

Then I realise the laptop doesn’t have a built in network card and I would have to rely on getting the wireless card working. Yeah right…

So, I might wait to grab an old desktop from home.

But, people like this???
