Skype 2.0 for Mac Intel-Only

February 12th, 2006 No Comments   Posted in communication

The Mac Observer has an interesting report on how the new version of skype will only be supported on the new intel based Mac’s. I wonder if this is a sign of things to come. Will more and more applications start to write only for the intel based mac’s. Make sense I guess from an application developer perspective but will be a pain for those with power pc based macs.

“Internet telephony company Skype will soon release a new version of its peer-to-peer VoIP software for the Mac with video and 10-way conferencing capabilities that can only be used on Apple Macs with Intel dual core processors, The Mac Observer has learned.

Version 2.0 of Skype for Mac will take advantage of the multi-tasking capabilities of Intel dual-core processors and allow a conference call to include up to ten people at the same time, as well as offer video calls. The new features can only be used with the iMac and MacBook Pro laptops, both announced in early January as the first Mac products with Intel Core Duo processors.

“The new version will be available to Skype users sometime in the second quarter,” Tim Cox, a public relations representative for Skype with the firm Spark PR, told TMO. Mr. Cox said the new version will work with any Mac, but will auto-detect Macs with the Intel dual core processor to allow use of the added features.

Skype announced February 8th Skype 2.0 for Windows with the same new features for Intel dual-core processor-based PCs. The two companies are planning additional feature extensions and optimization of Skype for Intel’s dual-core processors including optimized video calling.”

gmail and google chat

Brad Hill over at theunofficialgoogleweblog points out the big google announcement:

“One of the big holes in Google Talk is about to be filled–in a proprietary manner. Google is in the process of rolling out Gmail Chat, a feature that will save chat transdcripts within Gmail, and subject them to search. Saving and searching archived chats was impossible when Google Talk was rolled out. This integration of Google Talk with Gmail also helps explain why owning a Gmail account is a requirement of Google Talk.”

treo 700w

Treonauts has their take on the new treo 700w. It may help you decide on the ongoing question – should I upgrade??

“It seems that many Treonauts cannot wait for me to finish my detailed review of the Treo 700w and would like to know _now_ exactly how I feel about this latest addition to the Treo family so below is my take…

Aside from a few details, the hardware specifications on both the Treo 700w and Treo 650 are nearly identical.  The major difference is an enhanced 3G EVDO radio which allows the Treo 700w to access the Internet at broadband speeds (400 to 700 kbps) as well as a slightly faster processor, more user available memory, Bluetooth 1.2 and a 1.3MP camera.”

Verosee - free workspaces for skype.

October 21st, 2005 No Comments   Posted in communication

This is a neat idea. A add-on to skype that will allow shared spaces for files and chats. Still in beta at the moment but is looking very promising.

‘You depend on files and conversations with people that are geographically dispersed, not always connected to the network, at different companies, and occasionally on the road or at home.

Verosee extends Skype™ to provide free workspaces that automatically synchronize files and chats—with or without an Internet connection—and eradicate the disorganization inherent to exchanging email attachments and portable media. Verosee enables team members to be contextually aware of each other’s status and activities, bringing convergence throughout the project life cycle—before, during, and after meetings. ‘

    Google talk being opened up?

October 14th, 2005 No Comments   Posted in communication

Uneasy Silence points out that Google look like they might be moving to open up Google Talk to communicate through a number of instant messenger mediums

“Seems like Google is up to NO GOOD. They just hired the lead developer of GAIM.

For the layman, Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, GroupWise Messenger, and Zephyr networks.

Ok, for those keeping score. Gaim works on ALL platfoms (unlike Google talk), and works with AIM, MSN, and Yahoo (unlike Google talk). Could this be their entry into the fiercely competitive IM field?

Also, my thoughts are Google is going to buy AOL. More on that tomorrow.”

I am not sure about the “no good” comment – surely anything that helps us work together more effectively and communicate more efficiently is a good thing? Of course the rumour for a long time is that Google will open up their jabber protocol that google talk is based upon.

    msn and yahoo IM linked?

October 12th, 2005 1 Comment   Posted in communication

This is huge news if it is true. Betanews reports that Microsoft and Yahoo have come to terms and agreed to link their Instant messanging network.

‘Microsoft and Yahoo are set to announce on Wednesday a blockbuster interoperability deal that will reshape the landscape of the fragmented instant messaging market. The companies will connect their IM networks so users on each can communicate with one another using text and voice chat free of charge.

The agreement marks the first time major players in the highly-competitive IM industry have officially partnered up to enable cross-network communication. Interoperability has always been a hot topic among instant messaging providers, but had never yielded a compromise.’
